Edges, FO8

My lesson with Danette on the Chandler adult skate. Beautiful ice and just 5 skaters.  I was first lesson, so no warmup.

Today's lesson:

  • edges -- FO8 & FI8 mostly okay.  Before we started back edges we took some time to work on just pushing onto a back edge and going straight down the line.  It's really hard for me to keep this position with the skating shoulder held back.  Eeep.  Then we went on to BO edges (not too bad) and BI (pretty nice, actually).
  • FO8 -- just a couple of minutes on these.  Still not making it around the circle; posture needs work.

Edges, 3s

My lesson with Danette on the Chandler adult skate.  Nice ice and 4 skaters.  First lesson, so no warmup.

Today's lesson:

  • edges -- urph.  Posture was actually not bad on FO and FI.  After that we worked on just pushing onto the B edge and trying to hold the skating arm/shoulder back and turned into the skating side.  Yow, this is hard.  Then we did BO and BI edges and they were mostly okay.
  • 3s -- eep.  We have not looked at these in a long time and they were pretty bad.  Yow.  Just doing them from the line.  Ugh.

B8s

My figures lesson with Danette on the Chandler adult skate.  Nice ice and just 4 skaters.  I scribed circles and warmed up with forward edges.

Today's lesson:

  • B edges -- eep.  Not too bad.  We spent some extra time on the BI initial push, still working to get more power and to get that foot turned out so there's no BO edge to start.  Some progress.
  • BI8 -- Really working on posture and control and a better push. Circles were small and I wasn't making it around.  We also spent some time working on doing a 'supplemental push' -- i.e. that scooter push that of course you aren't actually allowed to do.  I have problems pushing w/the free foot (picking in with the toepick and bringing it through to push) going backward.  Eeep. Key is to really turn the foot so the top toepick catches the ice (esp. since there's no bottom toepick).
  • BO8 -- just a couple minutes on these.  A better push but still struggling to stay turned into the circle with the upper body.  Yikes.

F8s

My figures lesson with Danette on the Chandler adult skate.  Nice ice and just 4 skaters.

I warmed up with all edges and scribed circles.

Today's lesson:

  • FO8 -- most of our lesson time.  Eep.  We worked on posture.  Especially, getting good posture (not breaking at the waist, not leaning forward) from the first push.  I really struggle with this -- I'll push and be all forward and it will take me several feet before it's fixed.  In the meantime I'm also not leaning into the circle so I'm going too straight instead of curving.  Urph.  Also not making it around the circle.
  • FI8 -- Just a few minutes on these.  Better that FO but still struggling.  Much the same issues.
As you'll have noticed I've not had a freestyle lesson in some time.  Changes in freestyle times at CCIC are causing me to struggle with finding a time that works since there's only early afternoon ice now.  Eeep.
